What is the Oregonian?
The Oregonian on Newsbank is a full-text database that includes local and regional news articles in the Portland newspaper from 1988 to present. It can be accessed at Oregonian; if you are accessing the database from outside the Chemeketa campus, you will need your My Chemeketa user name and password.
The Oregonian allows basic searches and advanced searches. It can also be browsed by date.

After typing in your search terms and clicking once on the Search button.

A list of citations will be displayed. Each citation indicates the title of the article and the date on which the article appeared. Citations are listed in chronological order, starting with the most current citations. To view the complete article with citation information such as author and page number, click once on the underlined title of the article.
If the terms you searched for produce no results, select other terms that may be used to describe your topic.

Click on the title of an article to display the full text. To print the article, click on "Printer Friendly." This will reformat the article for printing. Click on the browser's print button (

To download the article to a disk or travel drive, click on "Printer Friendly," go to "File" and "Save As". Be sure to select the correct drive and save the file as plain text by putting ".txt" extension after the file name, for example "salmon.txt".

From the basic search screen, click on
. The advanced search allows you to search a specific part of the article (or field). Search fields include author, headline, section, and others. If you are searching for a phrase, put it in quotation marks. Selecting the Lead/First Paragraph option will also improve your search results. The advanced search allows more control than the basic search; you can combine multiple search terms or search within specific time periods.

The Oregonian can also be browsed by a specific date. Enter the date using the mm/dd/yyyy format, for example 03/12/2004 and click on Browse.

The newspaper sections (Editorials, Sports, Arts and Living, Business, etc.) will display. Select articles under section headings by clicking on the title of the article.
